North Dakota: a whole lot of nothing and then BAM!

Saturday 1 August - Day 5
Fargo, ND to Medora, ND: 351 miles

Let us begin by saying that we are writing this post from an authentic old west general store...with WiFi. Ah...technology! Now about the title of this post; here is our take of North Dakota:

Fargo - 120 miles of nothing - Bismarck - 120 miles of nothing - BAM! amazing scenery!

We left Fargo this morning just before 6:30am. Rode I94 (a straight interstate for the entire 350 miles) with 2 gas / coffee stops. The temps never got above 55 degrees! We met and passed many bikers on their way to Sturgis.

Here is a pic from I94 and some of ND's nothingness:

We finally reached Medora around noon (mountain time). We set up camp at Cottonwood Campground located in the Teddy Roosevelt National Park. The campground is in the middle of the park and is right along the White River.
Here are our tents:

Here is a picture looking north from the campground:

After we set up camp, we rode the 36 mile loops that winds its way through the park. The temps finally climbed in the 70s so we ditched our riding suits for cooler clothes. The loop was beautiful and here are some pics of the wildlife we saw.
Here is one of 10,000 prairie dogs:

Here is a large buck right along the road:

Here is Gumby and Pokie ready to explore the wilds of the national park:

Here is one of the many pull-offs providing a great view:

Here are wild horses right next to the road:

Here is a buffalo crossing the river right down from our campground. It eventually wandered right next to the campground.

Tomorrow we have about a 500 mile day, so we want to get an early start. We will leave Medora and head into Montana. Our final destination is Cut Bank, MT. We are both looking forward to getting into another state.

  1. Sorry to hear about your sunny weather! Barb and I are on the FMT #8, mini-style. We rode to Frederick, MD, in torrential downpour Friday, missing the EF 1 tornado (we were unaware of) that touched down in nearby Ijamsville with 100/mph winds. After that,we quit griping about the rain. We're staying at a neat Fairfield Inn where Barb had free points. We hit the hottub after we arrived, soaked to the skin. My waterproof boots actually had water in the right one for only the second time. (The first time was riding to the RA rally through Hurricane Isabel! Remember that trip, Doug?) The rain moved out after we got here around 3 on Friday, so we walked to suppper and a movie, then turned in. Saturday dawned sunny and nice and we went to the C & O canal to ride a mule driven barge, and then to Antietam, riding some nice back roads along the Potomac, and through the mountains. Today dawned rainy again, so we are waiting out the rain hoping it lets up before we leave for Huntingdon. Barb's riding back with me to stay overnight, then home alone tomorrow. We're loving your blog and hope Pokey and Gumby are learning a lot about their great country! Take care!!
