Redding, CA to Reno, NV: 217 miles
Got up very early this morning hoping to beat the 100 degree heat. Mission accomplished. When we arrived in Reno it hadn't hit the 90s yet.
As we traveled east through California and over the Sierra Nevadas we rode through an active wildfire. Luckily the part that we could see from the road was only smoking. Here is a picture of what was left of the fire:
Rte 44 through eastern California was beautiful. It climbed to an elevation of almost 6,000 feet and cut through pinewood forests.
We crossed into Nevada late morning setting our sights on Reno: "The biggest little city in the world". Prior to the trip, Shawn had found a great deal at a casino in Reno. We booked a room there for a great price. We stayed at the Atlantis Casino and Resort. It is very large, flashy and you could feel the devil's grip on the gaming floor.
After a quick bite to eat for lunch we decided to try our luck on the One Armed Bandits. Luckily, Doug hit $50 on his first pull. He stopped shortly thereafter. Gumby got in on the action as well:
It was interesting to watch people gamble as we walked through the casino. The septua- and octogenarians are the worst! They are super serious about their video poker and slot machines. Do not get between them and their potential winnings!
For dinner we ate at the Sushi Bar located in the casino. The sushi was really fresh and very tasty. Both Doug and Gumby enjoyed their multi-colored selection of raw fish.
Tomorrow we head east across Nevada. Our final destination is Wells, Nevada. We are planning on heading out early again to beat the heat.
