Babb, MT to Lolo, MT: 250 miles
Got up this morning wanting to get an early start but we had very foggy conditions in Babb. We decided to wait and let the sun burn the fog off, it was the right decision. When we finally got on the road, the mountains were out and in rare form.
Today we rode the famous Going to the Sun road. The road is a 50 mile paved road that cuts through the heart of Glacier National Park. It also crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass reaching an elevation of 6,600 feet. The road was constructed in the 1930s and is considered one of the prettiest roads in all of the USA. The national park service is currently rebuilding large sections of the road, so we did sit in quite a lot of construction while making the trek.
Here is an image at the start of the road:
As we climbed towards Logan Pass, more mountain sheep greeted us:
Here is another view of the magnificent scenery that GNP has to offer:
On the road there are only two tunnels that were carved into the mountain.
This is a creek that flows though the valley bottom on its way to Lake MacDonald. The water was really rushing and it was crystal clear.
We eventually made it into Lolo around 2:00pm. Once we checked into our motel, Pokie got a little thirsty:
Tomorrow we leave Montana to ride Rte 12 through Idaho. We are planning on stopping in Clarkston, WA at Mac's Cycle Center. Mac's is both a BMW and Kawasaki dealership. We are going to change our oil and carry on to Walla Walla for tomorrow evening.
Keep it up guys ... the blog posts that is; we're really enjoying them. [We both have been looking forward to end-of-the-day because it is then that we can run upstairs and check out the blog.] You aren't kidding when you say that scenery is beautiful. It is, in current vernacular, awesome. Keep taking lots of pictures. The glacier/global warming photos are scary. Please continue to drive carefully and be safe.
