Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Saturday 15 August - Day 19
Sundance, WY to Murdo, SD: 331 miles

Sadly we left Wyoming this morning and crossed into South Dakota. Both of us really enjoyed our time in Wyoming and found the state to be one of the most beautiful that we visited on this trip.

Once we entered into South Dakota we immediately started climbing through the Black Hills. Our first stop was the Crazy Horse Monument. As you can see in the picture it is not complete. When finished it will be Crazy Horse pointing while riding his horse.

After Crazy Horse we rode the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. These two roads were some of the best roads on the trip. They were mountain twisties with amazing scenery. Both roads were full of one lane tunnels like the one pictured below:

While riding these two roads we saw a heard of bison and a group of wild donkeys. As you can see in the photo, they were right out in the middle of the road. We pulled right up to them and Shawn petted them on their noses.

After riding through the Black Hills we finally reached our goal of Mount Rushmore. It is tough to put into words the feeling we both had as we stood before the faces of four of the most famous American presidents. All politics aside, it did give one a sense of patriotism and pride in our nation and what we have accomplished.

After Mount Rushmore we headed east. We made a lunch stop at famous Wall Drug in Wall, SD. This place was neat but there were way too many tourists there. We grabbed lunch and hit the road.
After Wall we entered into the Badlands National Park. South Dakota's Badlands had a totally different look compared to North Dakota's. The rocks had so many different colors. they were truly beautiful. Here is just one pic of some of the rock formations:

After the Badlands we continued east to our final destination of Murdo, SD. Once we checked into our motel we went and visited the Pioneer Auto Museum. It was well advertised all down I90. This place was just nuts! There were over 38 buildings of antique cars, motorcycles, farm machinery, housewares...you name it. Here is just one item in their massive collection: Elvis Presley's Harley Davidson:

We have decided to shorten the trip home and do some high mileage days. Tomorrow we head east and then cut south-east into Iowa. As it stands now, we are shooting for a Tuesday arrival back in central PA.
