The not so mighty Mississippi...

Friday 31 July - Day 4
Duluth, MN to Fargo, ND: 310 miles

Unlike yesterday, sunny weather greeted us this morning and stayed with us the entire day. We left Duluth around 8:00am and rode through north-central Minnesota all morning. The ride was quiet with lots of trees. Minnesota's licence plates says: 10,000 lakes. We don't know about 10,000, we lost count at 6,345. Really, we rode past so many lakes today...it was hard to believe.

We arrived at Itasca State Park around 11:00am. We stopped here to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Below is a picture of the marker just before the river's headwaters:

At the headwaters of the Mississippi, the river is only about 1o feet wide. Here is Shawn standing at the headwaters:

Gumby and Pokie decided to ford the river on their own:

We didn't stay at Itasca too long. As you can see in the picture, there were tons of screaming little kids and angry parents. Shawn said we needed to get going, or he was going to kill one of the kids.
We left Itasca and rode another 50 some miles to Fargo, ND. From Itasca to Fargo the geography definitely flattened out. Many of the small towns were dotted with large grain elevators. Here is a picture of the welcome to North Dakota sign. It is the one in the middle.

We stopped in Fargo to visit and spend the night with a former high school friend of Shawn's who now lives in North Dakota. Once we arrived at Mike's house, he took us into downtown Fargo. Throughout the city there are painted buffaloes. Here is an example of one of them:

We spent the night visiting with Mike's parents. They took us out to eat and gave us a tour of Fargo. We have only seen a very small portion of North Dakota so far. Everyone tells us that from here west throughout ND, there is not much of anything. We are both looking very forward to seeing just how crazy the geography will be tomorrow.
Tomorrow we plan on riding across ND to reach Medora on the western edge of the state. Tomorrow is a camping evening. Probably not going to have WiFi. Check in just in case. If we don't have WiFi tomorrow night, we will definitely have it on Sunday night in Cut Bank, MT.
