And the journey begins...

Tuesday 28 July - Day 1
Howard, PA to Mackinaw City, MI: 685 miles
Whether it was anticipation, nerves or just restlessness, we woke up this morning at 4:00am and got moving. After a cup of coffee and a final check of the bikes, our tires hit the pavement at 4:50am. We knew we had a long day of interstate with many miles to be covered, so we got as early of a start as possible.
The ride through PA was dark and uneventful. We made really good time and reached Youngstown, OH a little after 7:00am. After a quick stop for fuel it was another 170 miles on the Ohio Turnpike which took us to Toledo. At Toledo we met up with I280 which took us into Michigan. Once in MI, we spent the rest of our day on I75. Shawn was able to snap some great pictures while riding down the highways today.

Ohio before breakfast...what could be better?

When Shawn wasn't taking pics of the scenery he was taking pics of himself.
We were greeted with clouds and winds once we hit Michigan. Sorry for the small photo, but it was a last minute snap shot. The winds continued for the entire trek through the "Mitt" of Michigan. At some points the winds were so strong that Doug was almost blown off of the road!
Here is a typical pic of Doug on the mighty ST. What is sexier, the bike or the rider?
This is a pic of the Mackinaw Strait's Bridge. Under the bridge is where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. The area is known for its strong winds and storms. We will be crossing this bridge on Thursday morning to get to the Upper Penninsula of MI.

After 600 some odd miles, even Gumby needs a beer.
We called it an early evening. Both of us were pretty beat up from the wind today. Looking forward to touring more of Mackinaw City tomorrow.

  5. This is so neat being able to "ride" to the Pacific with you guys...its been 39 years since Shawn's Dad and I did this. Definitely want a picture of Gumby and Pokey in front of Crazy Horse! They had just started it when we were out there.
